It's not saying your spike has to be 5" or less it is defining a <5" spike as an antlerless deer.
It's saying you can either take an "anterless deer", which is what they consider it to be with a 5" or less spike, or an "antlered deer" that has 3 pts or more on one side. So a 6" spike would not fit into either classification, and would be illegal to take.
And yeah, it's kind of silly.

I been hunting under these rules around here for years. It sucks in archery when you multiple 3 point 4 point but never a legal buck or doe walk under you.
This is how all the WMAs with 3 point rule are here in central.

I almost made a big mistake the first year they changed to this rule. I understood it wrong and I had a fork horn 4 point come in about 10 yards away. I was sitting on the ground and he was looking my direction. I didn't move for fear of spooking him. There was one chance to draw back and I didn't take it. He busted me.
About 5 minutes later a wonky racked 3 point came in. Two points on one side and a spike on the other side. He came in on the same trail the other one did.
Later that day I talked to the check station guy and he said I better be glad I didn't shoot either of them or I would have had to explain it to the man. I interpreted it as I could shoot anything under 3 points but I guess I was wrong...

Actually, read the rule closer. An antlerless deer is one with horns "less than 5 inches". So if you see one with 5" its not considered antlerless. Should just make an antlerless deer just that, no antlers at all or less than 1" above hairline.

I wish this state did like some of the northern states and required the harvesting of a doe prior to the harvesting of a buck. This state is over run with does.

I had a girlfriend once who always bugged me to take her hunting. She hated guns, was a vegetarian, couldn't stand the outdoors, thought Disney's Bambi deserved an Oscar award, and was a member of PETA.
I always figured she wanted to mess up my hunt, so I never took her. Finally after months of pestering me I asked her.
"Name one skill you possess that would benefit me taking you."
She looked at my crotch and said to me "I can tell the difference between 5" and 7" from 300 yards away"
EDIT: Sorry if that was corny. The above joke was thought up in an intoxicated state

Why in the world would you want earn-a-buck in Fl. That itself is one of the dumbest things ever to happen to hunters. I have read so many horror stories about guys in Wisconsin not being able to take the buck of a lifetime because of a retarded law. Why not just a few doe tags or something like that if your so over run with deer?

You guys need to quit comparing Northern states deer to Florida. The deer populations or dynamics are not even close. Jeff and I don't always agree on antler restrictions, but I will agree with him on this "ear a buck" gimmick. It would deplete our deer herd in a matter of a few years

I'm really not against ar's if they'd just open more public lands. It's frustrating when I keep reading so many posts from hunters with all these different ideas on how I should hunt on private land that they will probably never set foot on in their lives. And at the same time the state has millions of acres of public land with very limited hunting opportunities.
