"Scrape" like area on cypress tree

Post by Rpd63 » Sun Feb 08, 2015 6:59 pm

Not sure where to post this topic so feel free to move it. I came across a group of three cypress trees that had its bark scraped off. The scraped area started at about three feet off the ground and went up the tree to about the eight foot mark. The trees are about 10 to 12 inches in diameter. All three trees are within 5 feet of the others. They are located in Hernando county.
Just wanted to get some opinions on what caused the "scrapes". Thanks

One of 2 things. Either something like a bear or a kitty cat scratched it. Or it was a squirrel stripping bark for a nest. Looks more like scratching to me.However, I don't see claw marks. Usually squirrel stripping will be a strip here and there, not all in one spot like that.
Or, it was a bigfoot..........

Thanks for the response. We have never seen bear on this WMA, or any on our cams but that is kind of what we were thinking.
Or maybe it is a Bigfoot. Lol

I'd vote for the squirrels on this one. See it quite often around here, seems like they work on their nests all the time.

No, much higher. They start at around three feet and go up to about eight feet. One of the trees went to a height of around ten feet. Oddly, they were all on the same sides of the trees.
