Ammo choice for hog hunting with .223?
.223 round suggestion for hogs?
I was planning on using American eagle 50gr tipped varmint for this weekend's hunting. Bad choice?

Yes very bad choice. You need a bullet that won't fragment like a varmit bullet will. Barnes are my fjrst choice. If you go with a typical cup and core bullet I recommend federal fusion

I recommend aiming at the ear with a 223.

a 150 grain bonded bullet over 2000 fps should do just fine

I was looking at some Hornady Super performance 75gr BTHP rounds at duck's sporting good. What do you guys think of this ammo?
I don't really like HP rounds personally because it seems they literally explode inside the hogs body and leaving shrapnels everywhere...

Send kemster a pm, he shoots A LOT of hogs with his AR. I think he is shooting something like 62gr bullet. Can't remember exactly what it was.

Re: Ammo choice for hog hunting with .223?
sorry for the confusion. what i mean is pigs are tuff critters and using a .22 caliber bullet is on the small side of the equation. under IDEAL conditions and skilled hands pigs can be killed with small caliber bullets. just not highly recomended. as hunters we strive for quick kills and with small caliber rounds this usually means a head shot. remember rounds must retain enough energy to get the job done and the .223 energy drops quickly. if i remember the Elmer Kieth standard was 1000 ft lbs of energy at point of impact not at the muzzle. not very many times do we get the ideal head shot in the field and yes i know there are exceptions. not trying to talk anyone out of anything just contributing to the discussion.

Kemster shoots the 62gr federal fusions. I believe he had an issue shooting the superformance bullets. But it may have been in an Ar10 platform. Broke the extractor i think

you will need a fast twist rate like 1-9, or 1-10 to stabilize heavier bullets over say 60 gr's. I agree with wingshooter. a small caliber/light bullet is ok if it's a well constructed brand and you are at a safe distance or in a tree, and can place it in the exact right place.if in a palmetto thicket with a moving big nasty coming your way, I'd want something with more smackdown to it. larger caliber and heavier wt. plenty to choose from.

almost as much as hitting one with a slug and it turns and charges, while i plug it with 3 more as it barrels in to death.
but chasing a wounded deer and tackling it was a rush just to part of i shoot it with 2 Power point ballistic tips no expansion. Thur the neck bone and the left rear side of the hip. what a time that was. My bud an officer actually tackled it. took it down by the antlers.
