Hog gun suggestions?

Post by FLoutdoorsman » Thu May 09, 2013 12:45 am

Hi everybody. I'm new to the forum and new to hunting. I'm looking for some advice on a gun for hogs. I'm thinking $300-400 range. I've heard various opinions, everything from "just shoot them in the ear with a. 22" to "they're practically invincible, you're gonna need a big caliber gun to bring of down". What's the truth? Also, what should I put out if I'm gonna try to bait them?

12 gauge shotgun. nuff said. You can get a remington 870 between 350-400. It will take down deer, hogs, birds, and intruders...

if you plan on spot and stalk and closer ranges and do not own many/any other guns, a pump shotgun and 2 bbl.'s can cover hogs and just about anything else. if you want a rifle the fastest handling, easiest carrying, best looking with tons of history and soul would be a lever. for a versatile point blank to 300 yd, gun a carbine length/lighter wt bolt action in a short action caliber like 243,260,7mm08 or 308 work well also. some like semi actions. I'm more of a traditional wood and metal guy. decide on exactly what you want, take your time and do your homework and you should be able to find a nice specimen of the ones I mentioned. an AR NOW is gonna cost more. good luck.

I have a 20ga Remington 870 Express, could I load that with buckshot and use it?

Ok, thanks. What size buckshot would be best? Most of the ones I've seen are about the size of the larger one in your avatar, give or take a few pounds...

I suggest if you buy a shotgun, buy a few different brands and sizes of buckshot and shoot them on paper thru different choke tubes to see how they pattern at different yardages. I will GUARANTEE you 95% of people never do this, and have no idea how their guns are actually shooting. 3" #1Buck thru a Mod choke tube is the most consistent load for me

Ok thanks for the help. I'm gonna grab a box of buckshot next chance I get. Should I aim for the head? I've heard about how tough their shield is.

I have! Use slugs! Buck shot works much better on soft skin deer than leather skin hogs, my opinion. Shot one twice at 20 yards with 12 Ga 3" OO buck while he was on the move and he dropped, recovered, shook it off both times. No blood trail either.

Yeap all ya need to do is go out on the Balcony and fire off a couple of rounds and you'll be good to go with the intruders.
