Cooler/storage question...

Post by rb288 » Sat Feb 21, 2015 3:35 pm

Have a hog hunt coming up in a few weeks and a thought hit me.
If we are looking to get 3 hogs of 150 lbs, or so, skinned and quartered, total, what size coolers might I need?
I was thinking 2 150 qt coolers would be enough for that but now I'm wondering.
Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

That's plenty of room. It'll be some heavy coolers after loading them with ice, but that's a good problem to have.
You have some high hopes. I like that type of attitude!

"You have some high hopes. I like that type of attitude" you have to have an attitude like that when it comes to hunting. If you go in with a failing attitude then you are bound to fail. To me its not all about the killing, but the comarodarie , having a good day in the outdoors. Add a kill just that much better
Be polite, be professional, BUT have a plan to kill everybody you meet

Well, we went out and got our hogs.
One was 98 lbs, one was 138 lbs, and one was 264 lbs.
The meat filled both coolers completely.
The meat is being processed now, and in a few days we are hoping for some great eating.

Good job! Would love to read about the hunt if you have time. Looks like a 1st class place to dress a hog, concrete slab, water and power.

Nice job! I went pork hungry this year.. only Killed one hog. My buddy that I carried killed 2 but I only bagged one. I haven't spent the time or money in the feeders this year to go to the camp and shoot one but that is just my fault. That looks like it was a fun weekend...

Some specifics...
we hunted at Tiger Island Outfitters in Cedar Key.
They have about 30 acres they manage.
The hunt lasted about 2 hrs. through scrub, some wetlands, and some open fire lanes.
It was a very enjoyable time as it was the first hog hunt for the young ones.
As you saw, we got three hogs, 98 lbs. 138 lbs. and 264 lbs.
The meat was dropped off at Oneco Meats for processing and should have it back in a few days.
The weapons used were a Remington 700 sps aac in 300blk, an AAC 16" upper on a psa lower, and a .308 SCAR.
The 300blk used the 130gr. Hog Hammer. I don't know what the .308 used.
2 of the hogs were 1 shot drt. The other was a bad shot that caught him in the lower jaw. We had to track him down and finish him off.
All in all a great day of hunting and companionship.
