Dove season 2014/2015

Post by wingshooter » Tue Jul 29, 2014 10:12 am

Dove season is closer than you think this year. It starts at the end of
September. So get those shotguns out and wipe them down and go
Shoot a few rounds of clays. Hope to see the usual group out in the
field. Maybe some new folks will be able to make it this year.

I'm hoping to make it out this year. I usually get a dove club for Hilochee but a new job has me working weekends. Hopefully the field in Lake Wales will be open again and I can get a few days off and get out.

i went to a pay field last year. i was not impressed. i saw a total of 5 doves fly over the field. seems i have seen more than that in wmas during archery season. many people do not know it but you can hunt migratory birds on wmas as long as the wma is open for a season. old boys in richloam didnt like that shotgun too much during archery season however.

I hope my experience is better than that. Fingers crossed.

Hope to see some new guys in Davenport this year. I have been seeing a ton of dove birds in my daily travels so I think it will be a good year. The FWC had lots of places that allowed dove shooting. Three Lakes had an actuall dove field that was well maintained for years. I have shot tons of birds out of Richloam and is one of my favorite places for bird hunting. Be safe and have fun.

What do you look for when dove hunting in a WMA? Besides the obvious (doves). What type of terrain? Clear fields? Water hole?

You mean you shoot at the powerlines with a shotgun? Sounds like you'll cut them eventually if everyone did that.

I was successful in getting a season permit for the Hilochee WMA Dove Club. I have heard that people are seeing pretty good numbers of dove so far. I will report my results after next Saturday's (Sept. 27th) opener.

You talking about the Osprey Unit? I drove out there when they first opened that place. They claimed that they planted the field, but it was all overgrown with weeds and air potatoes. I never went back for the dove hunts. Let us know how it goes...

Kortsman, it was a joke, as in easy pickings.
