What I did was to sleep in a chair, as reclined as able. It was hard to cough up & spit out for a while, so gross as it sounds you just let it drain/dribble out. Good luck. Time is the best medicine.

As you have probly figured out, staying/sleeping in a more upright position is about the only way sleep will work. The sooner you can cough out that mung the better, but don't rush it. Fluids (hot if possible) and cupping/clapping on your back will help thin it & bring it up. If you can't cough/spit yet, just let it dribble out. It gets better day by day.

Granted mine (tonsils only) were done in the 1990's & it looked like he used a blow torch, I couldn't open my mouth much or swallow anything for about 3 days. The more fluids you can take in, the better & quicker healing. There's nothing wrong with a soft food thanksgiving. I've had a few clear liquids holidays & survived.
