Another score on public land

Post by Bossman » Mon Sep 29, 2014 11:15 am

It is always nice to be able to go out onto public land and harvest game. I had a 5 day hunt with a buddy of mine. The mornings was early and the nights were short. I got up everyday at 3:30 AM so we could make it to the woods before daylight, and never got home and in bed before 11:00PM. Out of the 5 days of hunting we were very sucessful bring home 3 deer (2 bucks and one doe)and not shooting everything that we saw. I Personally passed on a doe and a small spike.and my buddy passed on a 4 point and a doe. In order for anyone to be sucessful on publis land yopu haveto spend the time to get to know the land and its game. We litterally every day after we got down we would scout other areas.A typicalday in the woods starts by leaving the house before 4:00 AM and sitting in my stand one hour before daylight. Sit until 11:00-11:30. Then climb down and go scoutand find where the most sign is at. Come 2:45-3:00 get back ready for the evening hunt. Yesterday I was back in the stand by 2:45 and ran a buck off on the way in. I had sat therer for about 1 hours and it begain to rain. For better that 3 hours I sat in the lite rain with the hunt comming to an end it all came down to the last hour and then down to the last 5 minutes of the hunt. I look to my right and there he is A big buck. He stepped into the hole that we had trimed for it and posed. I raise my crossbow and start to look thru the scope and it was foggy. :no Hind sight maybe I could used something to wipe it off but with out thinking I just took best guess and squizzed of a shot. It went just barly under him. He took one bounce and turned around and looked and the lumanoc glowing. Oh well an 8 point got away and will be there for some other hunter to try and hunt on pulbic land. A Picture of one of the bucks we shot to come later.

Sweet. Guess I shoulda went this weekend. Every report said it was going to be a wash out, and it barely rained up there.

All the reports I got from private land this weekend on the east side was everything was laid up, nobody seen anything moving. I was sick as a dog all weekend, couldn't get out even if I wanted to.

Nice deer, sounds like a good active hunt :toast . I went on my first archery quota of the year this weekend and like said before the forecast was calling for a washout and I was tent camping so when a big nanny doe come by Saturday mid day, I wasted no time filling my tag and packed camp Sun. morning just before the big flood hit. Short, Sweet and just in time.
