Smelting and Ingots

Post by fishindad » Wed May 23, 2012 11:48 am

Well... I FINALLY got off my hind quarters and did it. It certainly was not hard. I just was a bit nervous. Over the past year, I had gather extra stuff here and there that I could use to dedicate to smelting. i also had gather various bullet, sinker and jig molds. Step one, get those ingots done!

Sunday night... I started the process. its honestly been fun. Key was to keep it outside! The non-lead items floated and skimmed right off. I also learned that wheel weights STINK. Literally. I think next time, I might try and clean them better first. NASTY.

Not bad for a first run! Once I get all the ingots done... Its time to cast my own slugs and jigs!

What is your mold for the ingots, a cast iron muffin pan?
How long does it take to cool them?

How did you pour them in the mold?

Sorry for the questions....I'm thinking of doing the cast lead thing and I'm trying to wrap my mind around handling 600°F material.

He uses the good old fashon method, I use the Lee ingot Mold, it makes 2 , 1lb and 1 , 1/2lb ingots, either way is good
