30.06 ready for the tumbler.

Post by Cr0ck1 » Sat Dec 01, 2012 2:03 pm

Got my brain together and got back in the hang of reloading, man once you get the feel for how the bullet feels sliding up and down its easy.

Got bout 100 casings de primed, and full resized in bout 20 minutes.

Ill update when i get them tumbled , charged, and bullets seated. Hopefully work picks up so i can get the stuff i need! Image

Thats all done. They are ready, already resized.

YES!!! like I said earlier, if you size dirty brass the dirt ends up in the die and leads to stuck cases. you can and some people do tumble them again after, but imo it's not needed and is just doing twice the work.

Like he said.....you clean and use enough lube....i like a little lube inside the neck, it helps to control the neck growing longer and having to trim the case every time.

you will want to check the cases over all length, trim as necessary
Chamfer the inside and outside of the neck...
Clean your primer pockets

What you loading the 06 cases with? (powder / bullet)

Well for now im just resizing and de priming.

Im going to load 150gr bullets. Not sure what type yet. Obviously a hunting grade.

Just waiting for work to pick up so i can get a tumbler, bullets, powder and other misc tools.

I got ALL of my 30.06 brass ready for the tumbler. But im not going to do the .223 until i get a tumbler. I want to take your advice and tumble first.

I figured get all the hard work done first on all my calibers so then all i gotta do is re prime, powder, and seat bullet. But im learning from all the advice that i should tumble brass first to get it fully clean before resizing.

what you can do to save $ and still have plenty of ammo for practice is buy 2 diff bullets of the same wt and as similar shape/length as possible, 1 a quality hunting bullet (I like nosler partitions), and a second of the lowest price for shooting paper. both should shoot to almost the same point of impact so you don't have to change the scope between bullets and hopefully you won't have to change the seater die either.

I currently have 18 diff caliber die sets, and sold a few but have never owned or loaded for an 06, kinda hard to believe. I've loaded calibers all around it however.

i know you didn't ask, but a good recipe i found for 30/06 is 48 grns imr 4064 and 165 gr projectile has worked good for three different rifles. also x2 on tumble first.

how dirty can rifle brass get when fired in a bolt gun? tumble brass? i have loaded for many years and don't own a tumbler. for sizing bottle neck cases i use a dry mica powder on the inside of the neck and very little wet lube on the outside of the case. when loading for max accuracy neck size only for same rifle clean flash out of primer pocket make sure flash hole is uniform trim all to same length. then weigh and measure all cases then seperate into small lots then chamfer case mouth and load. used this method for all loading and have good accuray 1 moa in a good rifle and minit of deer in others

a lot of it is oxidation and/or mold if stored in an un airconditioned area. I've seen some so bad they couldn't chamber. and they are almost sticky and then collect the burnt powder after shot. if they are a tight fitting neck sized round you really want them clean and lubed. for a revolver it doesn't matter as much. it really won't effect how they shoot as long as they chamber. bright and shiny are just more visually pleasing to me.
