Bowhunting Arbuckle first time

Post by Glowworm » Thu Sep 13, 2012 12:06 pm

All,

I drew an Arbuckle ARchery permit this year, never been, wanted to try something different and folks all say Arbuckle.

Any tips or tips from previous hunting trips you are willing to share?

Thanks

Stay off my land!!!

Just kidding. We'll be there. Walk far far away from other hunters. Google Earth pretty much tells it all for that place.

From talking with other hunters they LOVE the lake. Long walk, but it may be worth it. Find the acorns and you'll find the deer.

hehe, ok, will do.

With all the rain we have been getting, I wouldn't be surprised if half of Arbuckle isn't underwater.

I am going to try to scout it Saturday morning, gonna bring my mountain bike and some bug spray LOL

My dad was down there yesterday. School Bus Rd. had a huge mud hole in it just south of the check station. Hope they get it filled in or hopefully it dries up some. He didn't even attempt it in his 2wd Ram Quad cab.

well I went out, there was several mud holes south of the check station, but they had the grader out the day before opening day, and had the road passable by truck. A car would have an issue.

I stayed to the north, but didnt see any bambi's. Mostly nocturnal still not to mention that morning there was more traffic on schoolbus road than the deer had seen since last year. I was the 90'th hunter thru the check station.

When I checked out, someone had a doe hanging from the gambrel and the biologist was getting weight and measurements.

There wwas plenty of fresh tracks, but most i am guessing were during the night.

All I was able to take home were about 10 chigger bites!, and an empty cooler.

I hunted there Sunday - Wednesday of the first week. Guy shot a STUD 9 point Tuesday night. He was way they hell out off the Tram Rd. James Stovall is the dude's name. He rides a bike. If you see him, pick his noodle. He has been hunting there for 20 years and has it dialed in. You have to walk far to see deer there. We were walking 1.5 miles in. We didn't get anything but the deer are around. Don't fool around. Hunt the major and minors. I'd get in the stand and 6 AM for no reason. The deer were moving during the major and minor feed times. No other time at all.

I have the opening muzzle loader out there. Should be running wild at that point.

James Stovall is the guy who killed the state record non-typical out of Green Swamp West years ago!! It is on display at Bass Pro Shop as a full body mount
