Cocking string OR crank? (Crossbow)

So i wanted to know what you all prefer? Do you all use a cocking rope or have the crank installed and use it?

I noticed some guys use one or the other. I know from seeing peoples crossbows that if you install the crank , then you cant put the side panels on the crossbow.

What do you all prefer to use for tree stand hunting with a crossbow? And why?

I've got the ten point Titan with the accudraw. I've only shot it a few times in the 7yrs or so ive had it but to be in the stand its got to be easier to get it loaded up than a cocking rope.

Unless you are physically unable to cock a crossbow, you don't need either in a tree stand. Just reach down, grab the string and cock it. It is not that hard to do. I use a rope when target shooting, as you will wear your fingers out cocking it over and over. You can get a rope for $10. A cocking device is $80-$100 easily.

Say you shoot and miss, and the animal is still standing there....you don't have time to fool with a rope or cocking device. Especially when your adrenalin gets pumping
My uncle has a cocking device on his new crossbow and it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth. His grandson cocks and shoots his old one (13 years old/150# pull) by himself

I cock mine before I get in the stand, tie it off and climb up. You don't need to recock it unless you shoot. I carry an old beat up bolt to shoot it in the ground to unload it. Don't ever try to uncock one by hand. All you are doing is glorified dry firing it....

Funny you should ask because I'm wanting to get a cocking device. It might not sound right but if you cock it by hand chances are very good that you overload an arm and cause it to shot off just a hair. And it isn't the easiest thingto pull back and cock it when your in a climber.

When the bow is at rest, you mark the string on each side of the slide with a marker. When it's cocked you make sure the 2 marks are centered

Well this is what i did. I modified my side panels so i can have the cocking device installed and tucked away, and use the cocking string. Then if i cant cock it back ill use the crank!

My crossbow comes with an attachment to store the cocking end behind the scope.

i use a cocking rope. It easier and helps you pull the string back to the same point every time i marked my string so that its easy to see if its pulling one way or the other so far it pulls to the same spot on the string every time. With my old xbow that didn't have a spot to even put a cocking rope it would shot off couple inches at 10 yards which could mean a kill or a miss or a messed up deer you never find.

Always has been for mine...

Plus, I always use my crank to de-cock , works fine....I had an old bolt that I fired into the ground one time, but it buried itself so deep....it was a goner......just sayin

Mine has a two position lever for cocking or releasing....I take out the bolt, place the front on the ground, hold the crank handle, and place the lever into the release position, crank just a little to take the pressure off the trigger mechanism, and let it unwind......

Its an older Barnett, and maybe they no longer are built that way.....but that's the way I've always done it.
