Make sure to catch the tides and fish when the water is moving. Last couple hours incoming, first 3-4 outgoing usually the best. You'll have about 1 to 1.5 hours of slack tide in between high tide and when it starts going out again, depending on the amount of tide change there will be.

If you're fishing the flats from a boat, and the wind isn't too strong, try drifting across them using a popping cork with a shrimp just deep enough to bounce along the top of the grass. While drifting and watching the corks, you might cast a gold spoon or spinnerbait and pick up something.

If you're wading the flats, you can try the same popping cork/shrimp method, or just cast spoons, spinners, jigs tipped with shrimp, Berkely Gulps, etc. Cast just past the little sand holes and retrieve it across them, maybe leting the bait fall into the hole for a second, and then retreive again. The trout and snook will sit along those edges waiting for something to come by. They also sit along drop-offs where the flats meet a channel.

These are just some general flats fishing techniques. I haven't fished Cockroach Bay in several years, so can't be specific on locations or what is the best method to use. Maybe dsimpson or some other guys can be more specific.

I HAVE A BUDDY OF MINE WHEN WE WAS YOUNGER HE CAUGHT A CAT FISH AND TRIED TO SLING IT BACK OUT AND WHEN HE SLUNG BACK TO CAST IT THE FISH HIT THE POLE AND CAME DOWN AND STUCK HIM IN THE BACK OF HIS NECK THATS WHEN I LEARNED NOT TO EVEN TOUCH THEM I USE TO CUT THE LINE TILL I GOT MY PLYERS
HIS NECK WAS ALL SWELLED UP
