Pellets or powder?

Post by Batemaster » Mon May 21, 2012 12:06 pm

Saturday I was at BPS today debating on the Blackhorn powder or the 777 pellets. Ended up going with the pellets for now, but I was wondering what you all prefer and why? I have a feeling I'll be back for the powder after my range session.

If your gun will shoot 100 grains consistently. Then no need for loose powder. If not then youll need loose powder to tweak your loads. Both of my inlines shoot 100gr 777 pellets perfectly

I'm getting old and I'm retired and I can make time to measure, by volume, a replica black powder into a 35mm film canister. Since we've gone digital with the camera, the canisters are becoming like the proverbial hen's teeth. 209's in one can, bullets and sabots in one can and 4 or 5 premeasured loads in the possibles bag and I'm ready for the woods! I shoot a T/C Omega Z5. I'm hoping it'll group halfway decent to 100 yards!

All joking aside, these "imitations", "substitutes", or whatever you choose to call them really are like comparing apples and oranges. Many of them are completely different chemical combinations so trying to compare how they will do in YOUR gun is difficult without actually trying them in YOUR gun using YOUR loads.

100gr of one may give you vastly different results than 100gr of another....same thing with the pellets. 3 of one brand might give you different results than 3 of another.

I suggest you spend a day at the range and experiment.

Or get yourself a traditional muzzleloader and I'll give some of my favorite loads using the REAL stuff!!! LOL

"I suggest you spend a day at the range and experiment"

Best advice here! Determine what works best in YOUR piece and stick with it. No matter if its pellets or powder! I shoot the Pyrodex pellets and have had great success over the years.

I'm not looking for sub moa accuracy with my bp gun (although it wouldn't surprize me if I experimented some) 2 pyrodex pellets give me 1-2" at 100, so I'll leave good enough alone for a change, plus easier to handle and load. they make those red plastic tubes that hold pellets/powder sabot and bullet in the correct order and make loading much easier/faster and their cheap. may want to try one instead of different film cans.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to go with two 50 grain pellets, the 777 primer, and the 250 grain Hornady SST sabot. The person I purchased the muzzleloader from kept it in impeccable shape. No rust and I have already given it a good cleaning. He was using this exact same setup but with 777 powder. Ill take it out to the range and see what I find. Maybe ill pick up the BH209 and the 777 powder as well for the range and I'll see what performs best.
