Reloading your M/L (in the field)

Post by Iluv2hunt » Mon Oct 15, 2012 10:34 am

How do you guys reload your m/l's, right after a shot? I read a lot of reports where guys make a shot and reload their gun within seconds...
I really need to improve my method. It is simply not fast enough

I carry one of these, along with primers in the slots and a capping tool. (one of my guns, you have to use the capping tool, the WOlf you don't). I used to carry it in a plastic baggie in my back pack, but since started carrying it in a pocket that's quickly accessible

I carry the speed loaders along with T-handle pusher that pushes the bullet down about 3 inches. Then I use the ramrod to finish seating it. Hardest part is starting the bullet with just the ramrod. Once it's in the barrel a few inches, it's easy to seat.

I carry these three things. The black tool is to remove the primer. For some reason after the shot my primer gets stuck and I've had to use a plyer to remove it.Image

The black tool is also to put a new primer on (other end of it). I have to use it with my older inline. It's a bolt action and the breech plug is a bit recessed so its impossible to get fat fingers in there to put a primer on. With my Wolf, it breaks open and the primer is easy to get to

I use the same set up along with the speedloaders and the t-handle bullet starter. I've never reloaded after a shot. Never needed to. :cool2

yep speed loaders also and in my ol wolf I could break the barrel and the used cap would normally fall out as I loaded up. this omega is much more aggravating.

your not gonna get much faster than what your already doing with the tubes/pellets/bullet/sabot, and short starter. the slow part imo is the primer. 209's are bigger and easier to handle. my knight disc uses a 209 primer inside a plastic holder with a finger tab for handling which makes things easier. somebody makes a brass primer capping tool I used to use for my ruger old army, which helped with smaller primer caps.

I think I will just load both my muzzleloaders and carry both of them this season

I think it teaches you to be a better hunter. wait til your sure your 1st shot will count. those double rifles are nice, but expensive and am not sure if they are legal. me and my Bro had single shot b/p pistols but they were very inacurate.

I know I'm using a different setup than you but here's one of my setups. This is for my .50 flinter:

It's actually petty quick with a little practice. Powder from the horn to the cane measure, into the barrel, patch and ball from my pocket, thumb-start, ramrod, two qiuck little pushes of the priming flask and I'm ready. No caps, primers, etc.

Dump the powder horn and count to ten. Actually keep a couple of pill bottles with pelltes, primer, and a bullet. Been known to get a second shot off pretty quick.
