Ballistics Help - Sighting In Muzzleloader

Post by trouttouter » Sun Nov 17, 2013 4:15 pm

Hey, guys. Question for you all. I have a CVA Wolf and today I was sighting it in and ran out of time. I am shooting 100 grains of triple 7 pellets with 250 grain T/C Shockwave Super Glides I started at 13 yards to get on the paper. Once I was taking out the bull's eye I moved out to 50. Three shots in a row and almost all three through the same hole. The only problem was all three were 2.5" high. I didn't have time to shoot any more. Where does 2.5" high at 50 put me at 75 and 100 yards? From what I read that may put me at zero at 100 yards, which is fine. The other alternative is to just dial the crosshairs down 2" or so at 50 yards. What are your thoughts? I am thinking of leaving at 2.5" high at 50 yards and compensating by just moving the hairs lower on the animals body on a 50 yard shot. Thanks guys.

Ballistics Help - Sighting In Muzzleloader

I was using some ballistic calculators and I don't know if that is right. If I am 2.6" high at 50 yards with a projectile with a BC of .210 and a velocity of 1800 ft/sec here is what the yardages are.

Does this seem right to folks?

I guess the theory is the bullet is still rising. Only way to know for sure is to shoot it on paper at 100

I could be wrong but I think that calculator is for smokeless powder which should calculate different than black powder. Atleast thats what Ive been told.

Guess I will have to just take a few more shots after the opening morning sit. I don't think I will have a chance between now and then. Thanks, guys.

I don't think there's as much drop as you might think from 50-100 yards. I have same gun and same loads. Mine is zeroed in about 3/4-1" high at 50 yards, cutting same hole. I haven't shot it much on paper at 100 because my shots are normally 50yds or less. Last year I had the opportunity for a pretty long shot, by Florida standards. I had a big old boar step out at 125 yards broadside. I had a very solid rest on my tripod stand and held center mass on the shoulder crease and fired. Hog hit the dirt DRT. I couldn't find an entry or exit because of the shield/fat, but upon cleaning it the bullet went thru and thru exactly where I was holding it

Exactly my thoughts. I will just take into account the rifle is high 2.5" until I get more time on the range. That should take me out to 125 with pretty much the same aim point. I highly doubt I will get a shot at that distance or anything past that, but it helps knowing the rifle is VERY consistent.

So I couldn't take it. I adjusted the scope down by the correct number of clicks at 50 yards to (hopefully) put me at .6" high at 50, basically dropping it two inches, or 16 clicks. (Quarter inch per click at 100 yards x 2 since I was at 50.). I will shoot it again to be sure it is on paper where I think it should be.

Ain't no way I'd spin a scope that I knew where it was hitting unless I could shoot it to verify before taking it to the woods. I'd rather know it was shooting "x" high or low or whatever and compensate that way than start spinning it.

So I shot it again after spinning the scope 16 clicks down and a few to the right. Dead on. 2/3" high at 50 yards. Thanks guys!
