Lost hunter in the cypress
The search for a hunter who has been missing in the Big Cypress National Preserve since Monday night has been called off for the evening.
Authorities used a helicopter, search dogs and a ground search to locate the missing man.
Deputies say the 30-year-old man, Jamey Mosch, left for the hunting trip early Monday.
His twin sister Julie Crawford says her brother has been fishing and hunting his whole life and says he is very experienced, and very good at it.
“He's good at it. He knows he's good at it. People have paid him to take them out because he's just that good,” she said.
But she said this was the first time he had ever attempted to go hunting in the Big Cypress Preserve.
Friends who were also on the hunting trip say they were having truck troubles when Mosch grabbed his gun and went hunting. They said that they agreed to meet at a nearby pond an hour after fixing the truck, but that was the last they saw of him.
“They were getting ready to fix their truck around two in the afternoon and Jamey really wanted to get hunting. So, one of the guys took him in another area, about an eighth of a mile in - told him that there was a pond straight ahead and that they'd meet up with him later,” said Crawford.
She explained her brother is in good physical condition, but he has been sick with Lyme disease recently and that could be a problem for him overnight.
“That's a big concern - that he doesn't have medication for it. So, we're just hoping that he'll be found quickly and get home to be taken care of,” said Crawford.
She says her brother is a charmer - a lovable, good-looking former model who always makes everyone laugh. She says most of all though - he's tough.
“We know his skills. We know he's a fighter and a survivor,” she said. “We're just going to try to stay positive and ask for everyone to pray.”
He is believed to be in the area of Interstate 75 and Turner River Road in eastern Collier County.
The search for Mosch started around 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning

For his safe return.

Sounds like he has the skills to survive. Good luck to all involved in the search. Every single time I pack my gear I anticipate the worst...

The National Park Service is asking for the public’s help in the search for a lost hunter in the Everglades.
The National Park Service, assisted by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, is searching for the 30-year-old man, who was reported missing in the Big Cypress National Preserve around 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Anyone with information that could be useful in the search is asked to call the National Park Service at 305-242-7740.
Media inquiries about the search should be directed to the National Park Service.
Also, the 911 call sounds a little fishy (see link below). Hope this kid is ok.

Re: Lost hunter in the cypress
Thats an easy area to get turned around in!!!! I hunt Bear Island wich is just north of 75 on Turner river rd. That cypress with turn you around if your not carefull. If he's even remotly close to 75 he should be able to hear the cars at night.

Re: Lost hunter in the cypress
I just listened to that 911 call and it sounds like hes kinda
Sounds like he was walking away from everyone the whole time. Yea if hes only a mile north of 75 he should be able to almost hear the highway. Sounds like he has supplies to get him through the first night.
I love at the end "We have been trying to contact the NPS and FWC but no response."
Im glad to hear that both a state agency and a federal agency wont do anything

Re: Lost hunter in the cypress
I don't see how he can be lost 1 mile north of 75 on turner river. On the right side of the road if he keeps heading East he will hear the people at camp or the trafic on 75. He has to be between 75 and the main grade, other wise he will hit perocchi grade or or the ridge trail by heading that direction. People should have some what of an idea were they are at before entering the woods.
