How high should trip wire be??

Post by Iluv2hunt » Wed Sep 02, 2009 1:02 pm

I converted the trap over to a trip wire. Basically ran a thin cable across the trap, then up to a piece of 2x2 which props the door open. Hog hits the wire, knocks the 2x2 out, door falls (Hopefully  )

Not sure how high to put the wire. I have it about 15" or so now. But we are dealing with small hogs and I think they can go right under it. I'm afraid if I lower the wire, and a bigger hog goes in there that they can just step over the wire.

Hopefully with them frollicking around they will bump into it. It doesn't take too much pressure on the wire to trip it

I had fresh tracks in front of the trap this morning

When I walked up to the trap this morning I could smell them. They are camping out right back there. If you want to shoot one go get in my stand about 1 hour before dark. I wish I had time or I would

I would try to keep mine high enough the coons wouldn't set it off. But if you don't have that problem set it lower.

On the trap that we used to use, there were two stakes in the ground that held a piece of PVC down with a rope connected to it. When the PVC would be kicked out from under the stakes, the door would drop behind them.

One time we caught a female that ended up to be pregnant. She had the babies but the holes on the side of the trap were big enough so the babies could get out and run around. The babies would come in and out of the trap whenever they wanted. Eventually we let her go and they all ran off into the woods.

We had ours the same way, but I was having to get inside the trap to bait and set it. With the trip wire I can set it from the outside

haha yea getting inside the trap to set it was always a problem. Always had to have someone there with you in case it closed on ya "lol"

And hogs always used to get inside but not all the times go far enough in to kick the door closed. That can also be problem

What he said.
If you go to high you will never catch the little ones.
Did you cut the 2x in half and hinge it?
It makes it easy to trip
