What's the matter with this deer's jaw/neck?

Post by Iluv2hunt » Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:54 pm

This deer was hanging around all night. I got over 100 pics and videos of her. Looks like she needs a dentist

Looks like she has a tumor that has started growing and affecting her eating... She is looking a little thin for this time of the year.

Yeah definitely malnourished. Nothing in the trap...coons are tripping it, and can get out thru the door slats. Hopefully I fixed that problem where they can't trip it again

I laugh at my 18 year old daughter and her Boy friend when they set our trap and let the coons or other trip it. I tell them that they are some non traping jokers. I set my doors with a 10 lbs. rock but it only takes 1/8" to send the door dropping down that keeps the coons and squrils from tripping it.

Yeah, I got an "L" angle bracket on each side and a root stick that goes under the brackets on each side, and a rope that goes up and over to the door. It takes a good bit of pressure to knock the root stick loose. The brackets came loose and caused the stick to need very little pressure to trip it. I put some bigger screws in to hold the brackets so that should do the trick. Plus the coons are about 30# out here

In cattle when the condition shown in the picture occurs it's usually called "lumpy jaw". I think it was caused by some type of worm. There is treatment for domestic animals but she's probably buzzard bait. Treefarmer

My uncle shot a spike one time up on his property outside of Quincy that had a snout as big as a cows. He was definitely deformed. Looks like she has a tumor growing in there or some kind of infection.

I know that cattle do get lumps in the neck from worms. so that is my best guess.

Did a little research on "Lumpy Jaw". It is not caused by a worm as I said earlier, it is caused by a fungus called actinomyces bovis, thus the name of the condition is "actinomycosis". Usually enters the mouth through an injury, chewing something sharp like course stemmed hay, peanut hay, etc. in cattle. Same issues apply to deer. The worm thing is a cattle grub that rises on a cows' back during the life cycle of that parasite. Treefarmer

Interesting.
I had my camera set on video, and got some videos of her but can't upload them as attachments. I may put them on photobucket tomorrow if I have time
The videos show her jaw issue better
