Arrowhead/Artifacts in FL rivers

Post by swampdweller » Wed Jan 26, 2011 5:41 pm

Lookin to get some info on rivers or areas that are open to the public where you can and find arrowheads, sharks teeth, artifacts. I know ive heard of a river but cant remember the name. Also what time of year would be best to go. Thanks
It’s just a double barrel twelve
The stock is cracked and it kick’s like hell
It wouldn’t mean what mean’s to me to no one
I can hear his voice when I put it to my shoulder
Guns like a woman son it’s all how you hold her
He taught me a whole lot more than how to hunt
And one of these days I’ll pass it on to my son

I would imagine any of them would have artifacts in them. I know the Hills river in Upper Hillsborough WMA is really low right now. You can cross it in regular hunting boots(may be higher now since yesterdays rain) They close the gates year round, so you would have to hoof it in there.

My next door neighbor is an archaeologist, and one of only a hand full who can authenticate artifacts. Maybe shoot him an email

I also have found fossilized manatee bone there.

Yeah, the Peace River is pretty well-known for the large shark teeth, even megalodon. Because it runs down through the Highland Ridge, cutting through the heart of phosphate mining country, its waters carry an abundance of fossils, shark teeth, artifacts, etc.

The Santa fe river between High Springs & Fort White is a popular place to get arrowheads but you will need a small boat & dive gear to do it.

When the timber companies row the ground up to re-plant is the best time to find them. Just walk the rows and look.

Also when they row it after a hard rain is a good time to check back over it.

Also check out a fresh plowed field, with the farmers permission of course. Me and my uncle growing up used to do that in the Panhandle. They were pretty productive for arrow heads, spear points, etc., especially after a good rain. We just used a long stick and when we saw some flint, flipped it over to see what it was. I collected a lot that way and still have most of them.

I've also camped/canoed the Peace River and collected plenty of fossilized bones, and sharks teeth.

If it a wma or any state agency owned land you can not take them or dig for them.

Guy I know is a retired Wildlife Officer...and does that stuff all up around Aucilla. Spends a lot of time on the river, goes to the shows and everything. Man what a collection he has!

My family goes up to the Peace River a couple times a year. It's not really my thing, I go for the fishing, but if you want to try it go to the Peace River Campground in the spring and go upriver from the boat dock, dig where the gravel is and watch out for gators. They find all sorts of things from sharks teeth to glyptodon scutes to three toed horse teeth (yes you read that right).
