Need recommendation for meat grinder

Post by kc45 » Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:31 am

I want to buy a meat grinder to grind my hogs.
I'll use it only about a dozen times a year or less and it will need to grind only small (+/- 10 lb.) amount each time.
I'm not sure I need a electric one or just a manual one will be sufficient.
My wife and son loves burgers and meat loaf made from ground hog.
Right now I use a grinder my friend has but it's 50 mile trip each way.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

no it wont.
My recommendation is 1.5 hp size 32 stainless grinder you can price one from Cabals probably around 7-900

once you have one you will do more and more and more.

Now come on Ted. You know well the average man can't afford one that expensive.

kc45, Here's a picture of the grinder and stuffer that were purchaced from Northern Tool. Several years ago I purchased the #32 grinder for around $50. Some come with a pully that you can add an electric motor with a little bit of redneck ingenuity. I've worn out several of the "chinese specials" over the years but this one has a thrust bearing on the shaft that has eliminated the problems I had encountered before. Just can't justify paying a big price for a good grinder that I only use for 4 or 5 deer each year. treefarmer

Tree, the only problem I see with your setup is the lack of counter space. I would need at least another table just for the crap I haul out and spread out while grinding meat. A few bowls, cutting board, knives, bags of meat etc...

The oak table is on casters, both the grinder and the stuffer are bolted to the raised portion when being used. The raised part gives enough clearance for a good sized stainless bowl to set under the grinder. Roll the mess into the kitchen and we have counter space, sinks and a place to do our ground venison and make venison-pork sausage, bulk and stuffed. Have a big piece of lexan for a cutting board that over hangs my wife's counter top by about 4" and after you set the t'stat low you have a comfortable cutting room. Treefarmer

I got the same one from Lowe's a couple of years ago for $75 after rebate and I use it every season. Great little grinder.

One thing I am seriously thinking of getting is a foot switch for mine. I do it by myself, and there are times you need to stop the machine quick. Always gotta flip the switch with grubby hands

Iluv2hunt, I really like the Northern 15# stuffer. When I bought it LEM had the same identical stuffer but it was quite a bit more expensive. The only difference at that time was the label. Made in China, but it is well made, heavy steel frame, good quality stainless steel container, 3 sizes of tubes, steel gears, very easy clean up. Was using an antique Enterprise stuffer and it was a chore to use, even tried stuffing with the grinder and it just didn't do well, had the right plate, etc. made a mushy sausage meat. Been using this one now going on 4 years and no trouble. Treefarmer

Bought one from bass pro a few months ago, I love the thing, good solid construction. depends on what you want to pay for the quality though, I got the 1hp motor model and haven't had one issue with it yet

Hand crank grinder to start. They can be had cheaply....

Other wise I pay a good butcher $40 plus $1 lb for anything made into sausage. Usually a $50-60 deal, cleaned, cut, seasoned and wrapped!
