as a kid the Italian family across the street raised pigeons, why not chickens? not sure, maybe it was a city thing or because they didn't have homing chickens. but they would eat some of them and use a funnel with the small end cut off to allow the birds head thru and a straight razor to cut the head off, then hang upside down.
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing

My grandmother would grab the chicken by the head and do a windmill motion to kill it. Picture an old lady winding up like she's pitching fast pitch softball and that's grandma killing the chicken! LOL! Then she would cut the neck and hang it on a doorknob to let it bleed out.
Sounds gruesome when you think about it, but seemed normal at the time. LOL...

My mom told me When i was in P.R. Bout the time i was 3 i got nosey and peeked out the window at the top of the stairs, saw a huge rooster, it " cuk a doodle dooed" and i got so scared i fell down the stairs. Lol
So, if a rooster "cuk a doodle dooes" in P.R., is it in Spanish or English?

^^ Just messin with ya

So, one chick died yesterday morning. Actually wasn't looking too good the afternoon I got them. I drove back to TSC today. Told the guy one didn't last 15 hours, and I wanted a replacement. He said sorry, no warranty on live animals. Told him I did not care, I drove here to get one, give me a replacement 2 dollar chicken, it was sick to begin with. He did, now all 15 are healthy.
One thing for sure...these little fuzz balls shart a LOT!
They are putting on weight and already growing wing feathers. I'm ready for some fried chicken

No... just old school! LoL...

My grandparents also owned a rooster fighting ring. I know that a lot of people don't agree with that, but that's normal in spanish culture. I remember as a kid the fights were held on Saturdays. The losing rooster would go straight to the kitchen and be butchered. During the week week my grandfather and I would go up to the ring and take care of the chickens he raised.

I would lose my mind if I lived in a condo or apt. Like Phil Robertson said..."A man needs to be able to take a leak in his own back yard"

The ones they used back then were hard plastic spurs. No razor blades. There was a prep area where the guys would file down the natural spurs on the rooster and glue on spurs with hot glue. They looked like these

The ring looked similar to this, except a little more run down.

Sorry for the derail Allen. You just jogged some memories.

Week 1 update.
Birds have doubled in size. Their wings are pretty much feathered and starting to get tail feathers. Had one casualty. We had the brooder inside laundry room during cold . One morning rushing to get son off to school laundry door got left open and my attack daschund killed one of them. I got a dog pen to raise them in. I need to finish it off a bit. I will be glad to get them out of my screened porch. They eat and crap a lot, BTW...Image

Just got home and every last friggin bird I had is gone. 8 weeks down the drain. I swear if I find a feather near where that neighbor's cat patrols it's a dead cat.
