Meat chickens (part 2)

Post by Iluv2hunt » Sun Mar 16, 2014 3:24 pm

Stopped at two Tractor Supply stores on the way home today. 1st one had no meat birds. Second one only had 10. Bought all of them and also got 6 new mixed-breed layer pullets. The ones I have left are grannies now, so they are going to enter retirement soon. Plus while I was gone I had something get in the pen and kill 2 more

Week 1 update
The meat birds have doubled in size. They are eating and crapping machines, just like last year. By the second day they were jumping out of the cattle trough. Had chickens running across my pool table. So I zipped apart some pallets and screwed them together in a box, and they have been living in my garage
I took them all out this afternoon to clean the box. I put them in a play pen, and they layer pullets fit right thru the mesh. Had to go chase them down. So I put them in an ice chest while I did my cleaning

Meat birds are about the size of a fat quail. The layer pullet are about the size of a sparrow.

Funny stuff "Kortsman" I've got 9 ole girls left out of my bunch and the other day I had let them out while I was out in the yard messing around. They was hanging all around me squatting all in front of me looking for love. They followed me out to the mailbox to check the mail and when I got back to the house I was standing by the outside garbage can sorting thru the bulk rate mail and one of the ole girls jumps up on me as to say "HEYYY".

Sunday update.
Still have them all. They are growing like crazy and are big enough now to process and eat as cornish hens if I wanted to. I have one with a neurological issue (I think). He will lay on his side and act like he can't get up for an hour at the time. I feel the need to cull him, but I go out there and he is fine acting. No idea but he has worn all his feathers off from spinning around in circles

I got 4 new Ameraucana's this week. 6 months old at a great deal from a lady, and laying beautiful eggs daily. SOme of them even double yolkers. I should have asked a few more questions as to why she was getting rid of 4 beautiful young birds that are laying like crazy. Turns out they are aggressive and were picking on my lone hen pretty bad. Didn't realize how bad they were beating her until yesterday I found her dead and the 4 new girls beating the s*** out of her corpse.
