Meat Rabbits

Post by sam03 » Fri Nov 13, 2015 9:46 am

I have wanted to add rabbits to the homestead for a couple years now finally made the jump last weekend. I picked up silver fox buck and two silver fox/new zealand cross does. I ordered rabbit nipples to build auto water setup because i have dealt with water bottles in the past and they are a pain. I will post some pics this weekend once they are all setup in there new cages.

Bought a couple parrot cages that were 36"x36"x34" and cut them in half to make two cages at 36"x34"x18" which should be more than enough room even with the kits.

I recently got a couple New Zealands my self. The lady I bought them from said she didn't think they were old enough to breed yet so I threw them in a cage and took them home where I separated them into their own pens. A month later I had 7 more rabbits :eek . They're 3 weeks now and growing like weeds. Gonna be some good groceries.

I bred the 2 does 11-25 and 11/27 so the buck had a rest period between the two does. Still no babies but as of this morning doe #2 which was bred 11/27 started pulling fur and building a nest in her box. I'm going to give the other doe another week before breeding her again. Also need to setup the auto water setup filling water bottles is a pain.

Doe 2 had her babies last night. When i went out this morning to check and feed the farm the fur nest was moving in the box.

Glad to hear your rabbit project is going good. Keep a close eye on the other one, my doe didn't pull hair, she just had them right on the wire floor. It's just luck that my daughter went out and checked them early that morning and we put them in the box where she later pulled hair and took to caring for them. It's really common for first time mothers to not get it right the first round.

Very cool man! For some reason my rabbits don't seem to be producing. Trying to figure out where the problem is.....
