We try to burn under the planted pines every 2 or 3 years. 1st it helps the trees growth to eliminate competition for nutrients and eliminates the chances of wild fire by eliminating large woody plants. Some of y'all remember when the woods were burned every year to create tender growth for the range cattle. Deer and turkeys could be seen on fresh burn on a regular basis.
The food plot I spend the most time on is adjacent to a block of planted pines that we hadn't burned in a several years. It's a small block of Improved Slash pines, about 5 acres. The understory get too mature for good browse and also makes it difficult to spot a deer walking through the pines toward the feeder or the planted plot.
Early in the week I freshened up my fire breaks around the pines and on Wednesday I burned the block of pines. There was a northeast wind, so after calling the Forestry Service for authorization, I set fire to the southwest corner and worked east along the canal bank with my improvised fire pot. Got an excellent burn as the fire crawled into the wind. All we need now is a shower to freshen it up and we'll see green in a few days.
Here's a few pictures of the happening.

Man I wish the timber company we lease from would burn.
I don't hunt turkeys because I want to, I hunt them because I have to. ~Colonel Tom Kelly
