They use culvert pipe for the traps. It takes a really big bear to get to 600. I had 2 different boars on camera at the old lease that I thought for sure were 600#. I sent pics to Adam at the FWC (he is THE bear guru) and he said they were around 500, one of them possibly 525ish

Re: Largest bear ever trapped in Florida
I wonder how many black bears there actually are in the state.
I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard the last count they did utilized hair samples from thousands of collected hair snares, but that the funding for the DNA testing only supported testing for a finite amount of those samples (much less than what was collected) . I was told the number of samples collected were more than double of what was counted. If that is the case, it's very sad.
I think we are long over due for a black bear season.

I can't say I'd ever had Pecan Pie with Bear lard, but I sure would give it a try. That sounds delicious.
I've had bear steak BBQ'ed up in a vinegar based BBQ sauce, and I thought it was REALLY good. If I ever get a hold of some more I'm going to try smoking it.

I am in a minority when it comes to bear meat. I will give most anything a try. Had it a few times and I just didn't care for it. Too greasy for me. That's about the only animal I would like to hunt that I won't hunt for the meat. You could add antelope to the list also. Don't like it either

Re: Largest bear ever trapped in Florida
I took some advice from an old friend: soak your bear meat in a brine for a couple days refrigerated. What a difference. 1 cup brown sugar/1 cup sea salt/ 1 gallon hot water and mix until sugar is dissolved.
I don't know where you're at, but next time I cook some your welcome to a bite!

Re: Largest bear ever trapped in Florida
In no or of this I thinking gonna pull out a hind quarter, trim off all the fat and put the bear on the smoker. I'm down to one hind quarter and sure wish Florida would open a season as I have three bear hunts planned for next season and one this spring but we can't get enough bear meat!
