Ice Fishing In Nova Scotia

Post by CanadianBlackBears » Tue Jan 17, 2012 7:08 pm

Thought I would share a great winter sport we enjoy here in Nova Scotia, Canada. We spear silvery little fish known as smelts . They are really tasty when rolled in flour with salt & pepper, and fried in blistering hot oil till they are good and crispy. Mmmm :clap , I can't wait for the water to freeze and hit the ice. We use small shacks with a hole about 2 feet by 4 feet inside it . The smelts swim through with a little enticing using chum and we spear them as they dart through....This is a great way to kill time in the winter. I was out last week and there was only 3 inches of ice and didn't notice the tide had risen to the banks of the harbor, well, needless to say I did get wet feet trying to get off as I went through the ice into about 2 feet of water :censored . Here are some pics. from last winter.

Some people are like Slinkies ... not really good for anything, but you can't help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

we did it in N.H. but with MUCH smaller holes, made with an auger like 8-10" round. some of the set ups get pretty elaborate with heaters and such. driving on the lakes after the bars closed at 1am was a common event. 1 lake I lived on had car and motorcycle races, they would plow a track on it.

My accountant has told me stories of ice fishing with his brother up in Wisconson. They were sitting in this little shack on the ice and cars would be rolling by early in the morning, visibility about 0% due to drving wind and snow and nothing but a couple of reflectors stuck on the outside of the shed to stop them from being run over......ah the life...
