No Mack Fishing

Post by fishindad » Mon Mar 18, 2013 12:30 pm

Well... went for macks... I found these bruisers instead. Well... My family did.. My name that trip was "tackle dad." We headed out Friday on the last day of spring break. 5 dozen shrimp at Oneills for hopefully non-stop action for the kids. Carolina rigged with long shank hooks for the macks.

Waters were calm, winds were calm and it was a good ride out there. Once there.. Within 15 minutes. BLAM... the first hit. Lost it. Grrr. Next thing I know... another hit... BLAM.. rocked up. Then rocked up again. Ok folks... these are not macks.

I lightened up the weights.... BLAM.. 17 inch sheepie! Oh yeah. The action continues and then just before we run out of bait BLAM.. 19 incher caught by my daughter!

Overall a good day. No bait or Macks were seen though. They must have still be scattered.

Sheepshead will flat out clean your bait bucket out. They are on fire on the reef off Steinhatchee right now. Can't believe the boats that were out there in those gail force winds saturday

Cut into bite size nuggets. Get a pot of water boiling with crab boil. Skewer sheepie nuggets and hold in water for 2 min. Dip in melted butter. Poor mans lobster fondue

Sheepies feed on crustaceans so they taste very similar to a shellfish

macks were great of Venice pier thursday, first time i've been out there in a year.. busy with jerks like usual but had family visiting and they enjoyed it.. hooked up to a large shark also, but new rod setup wasn't perfect yet (spooled to loose of braid and it was getting stuck inside itself with any drag pressure)

no sheephead though.. was hoping for some variety on the grill..
