AR-10

Anyone have any experience with AR-10 .308? A buddy of mine had his 30.06 stolen and is looking for an AR-10 to hunt with this season. Any advise on a good one or ones to stay away from? Any for sale?

Not AR-10 but, I have an AR-15 in 6.8 SPC. Its a good 300 yd. rifle and not as heavy. I love mine.

Ar 10 is a great weapon.
Rockriver makes a great one. All around good gun many rounds through it never a problem. Rockriver is on the fnfal platform.

I prefer the Smith and Wesson AR-10. The price is not bad, but it comes standard with a totally ambi lower. Safety, bolt release, mag release.

The AR10 is wonderful but it is very heavy and not what I would use for hunting. I am going to use my 6.8 AR this year. Light and the 6.8 round is more than enough with Hornady 120SST ammo.

2 years ago I hunted the whole season with a 6.8 and really liked it. The rifle was like a laser, hit everything right were I aimed it. I was not impressed with the Hornady ammo though. Had problems with pass thru and tracking. I picked up a box of Barnes Tsx but ended up trading the rifle before I had a chance to try them out.

Which Hornady ammo was it? The SST bullet is much different than the V-Max.

Both of those are varmint bullets. Not big game bullets

If i buy from a store i allways buy rem cor lok. Ive had so many crappy situations with the hornady.

Yes they look cool, nice box packaging and good looking presentation. Shooting at paper is either spot on or not even close. They just zip right theough animals and leave a small hole (unless it hits bone) and tracking is a joke cause theres either no blood or a drop the size of a pin needle.

When i reload i even get the core lok bullets.

We will agree to disagree. The SST bullet is not a varmint bullet in my mind, more of a medium game. Check out 68Forums for all the info you will need for the 6.8 round. Almost everyone is hunting with 120SST's with great success. I will say my rifle is most accurate with Hornady or Silver State Armory ammo. I havent had a chance to try the Barnes TSX but I will very soon. I am honestly scared to due to the price, and I am sure I will like them.

Don't get me wrong, those SST's killed everything I hit, in a 2 week period I took down a buck, doe & hog. None had an exit wound though, the hog's chest cavity was completely shredded, the buck lost a right lung and I double lung punctured the doe. All 3 ran and the only one that left a trail was the doe because the entry wound looked like an exit wound. Maybe its based on distance before entry but its almost like the round exploded on contact. Atleast that was my experience. Hunting in the thick brush, a good exit wound is a necessity IMO, and a Barnes or Nosler should give it in a 6.8. I might get back into that caliber myself.
